Divine Therapy to replace the false self.
Thomas Keating says by means of contemplative prayer the Spirit heals the roots of self-centredness. 1 It is natural in this life that we are dealt some cruel blows and some people say we suffer to display Gods work in our life John 9:3 and find a way to healing. But how do we cope with this struggle? We make it worse when the false self fusses, struggles and refuses to let go. Our mind is like a programme in a computer. Our memories are like a click on a mouse that reactivates every time the same buttons are pushed. The only way out of this is to erase the emotional problems of the past and replace them with love. Centering Therapy helps to heal the memories in the silence.
The more you let go the stronger the presence of the Holy Spirit becomes. So that truly you can say you have learned the secret of being content.
Practice of Centering Therapy enables us to become empty by expelling from our troubled consciousness the junk which is a stumbling block to our natural divinity. The very thoughts that you lament while in prayer are freeing the psyche from the damage that has accumulated in your nervous system over a lifetime3 Tom Keating reminds us in Open Heart, Open Mind. So both the silence and the thoughts are equally as valuable.
Mother Teresa of Calcutta said that The fruit of Silence is Prayer. The fruit of Prayer is Faith. The fruit of Faith is love. The fruit of Love is Service and the fruit of Service is Peace. So, obviously, silence leads to peace. Silence should be treasured.
